Who Am I?

I am a radiation oncologist who was working at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences centre in Toronto for 29 years. I treated patients with breast and prostate cancer. I was also involved in research for cancer education and developed several programs for patients, helping them through their cancer journeys. Due to the progression of my kidney disease I needed to retire in April 2025, as I could not work due to my health situation. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with my husband Jacek. We have one daughter, Katie, who is 40 years old.

My Interests:

I love our cottage in Barrya Bay Ontario where we try to spend as much time as we can. There, we have a very close group of friends. I like music, hiking, watching movies, and spending time with my family and our dog Ben. We belong to the local YMCA where we go to exercise regularly. I love aqua-fit sessions.

My Diagnosis:

I was treated for an ovarian tumor called Dysgerminoma when I was 15 years old. This treatment was in Poland. After my surgery I was treated with radiation to my abdomen and that treatment damaged my kidneys. I was doing relatively well until 10 years ago when my kidney function started to deteriorate. I began my dialysis treatments 2 months ago, as I could not function and was very ill.

How A Kidney Transplant Will Affect My Life:

The kidney transplant will give me a second chance at living a normal life and avoid dialysis and the side effects associated with it, such as extreme fatigue and depression. I will be able to enjoy my life and travel and spend more time at our lake cottage. Currently I am unable to do those things because of my rigid dialysis schedule. I also hope that I will be able to return to conducting the research that I was involved with during my entire medical career.
