Who Am I?

I am 68 years old and have lived in Durham, NC for my entire adult life. I grew up in Windsor, NC, and spent many idyllic childhood summers at my family's beach cottage at Nags Head. While attending East Carolina University, I met my life partner and best friend, Sandra. We are celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary this year. We have a 30-year-old son, Will, and a precocious 8-year-old granddaughter, Aniston, who is the absolute joy of our lives. We also share our home with two dogs, Maggie and Charlie, and our orange tabby, Rusty.

My Interests:

Before retiring, I worked in the financial sector, where I found great satisfaction in helping others achieve retirement security. I still enjoy following the stock market, staying informed about politics, and studying history. My faith is a cornerstone of my life, and we are members of Edenton Street Methodist Church in Raleigh. I am an avid sports fan and also enjoy watching movies and TV series. While I love to travel, my stamina is currently limited due to my health.

My Diagnosis:

I was born with a single kidney, a birth defect that causes kidneys not to form properly in the first place. That is the essence of my problem. Eighteen years ago, I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. My lone kidney has had to work twice as hard over a lifetime, gradually wearing out due to the heavy workload. While someone with two healthy kidneys can safely donate one and live a normal life, my kidney was too defective to last. My wife and son have already been ruled out as potential donors. I have taken excellent care of my health through a strict diet and blood pressure management to prolong my kidney function as much as possible, but I have reached a point where a transplant is necessary.

How A Kidney Transplant Will Affect My Life:

My dream is to regain the vitality to enjoy the simple pleasures of everyday life fully, take family vacations, see my granddaughter grow up, and hopefully welcome more grandchildren. I choose hope and my goal is to continue living well into the future. I would be forever grateful for this gift of life!
