Who Am I?

Hi, My name is Randy and I am 74 years young. Until recently I lived a very active and fulfilling life. I grew up in Glen Cove on Long Island and attended La Salle Military Academy. In 1973 I married my wonderful wife Lynne and we just celebrated our 53rd wedding anniversary. Together we raised two sons after moving to Connecticut in 1976. Giving back to my community has always been important to me. Over the years I've coached Little League, umpired for almost 30 years and served as an on-field High School football official. I am also an active member of American Legion Post 76 in North Haven, CT. Professionally, I spent most of my working career as a Supervisor and Manager in the pest control industry, licensed and working in four states.

My Interests:

I love to travel, attend baseball games and concerts. As a member of the New Haven Football Officials Association, I am a clock operator for high school football games.

My Diagnosis:

About six years ago I noticed swelling in my legs and went to a kidney specialist. I was diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease. Despite treatment my condition slowly progressed through stages 3 and 4. Then in December 2024 my kidney function suddenly declined, causing severe fluid overload that affected my heart. I became extremely short of breath and eventually unable to walk. I spent Christmas and New Years in the hospital where I remained for 25 days.

The first week was spent in critical care. As I slowly recovered, I had to learn how to walk again and begin dialysis treatments. Today, I have end stage renal disease as well as Afib and require dialysis 3 times a week, with each treatment lasting about 4 hours, not including preparation and recovery time. Somedays I get terrible cramps in my feet and legs while having treatment. The cramps also occur during the night when I am trying to sleep. Dialysis keeps me alive, but it has changed nearly every part of my life. My wife and I love to travel but scheduling trips around treatments has become difficult and sometimes impossible. I also face strict limits on food and fluids, carefully monitoring sodium, potassium, phosphorus and even how much I drink each day.

How A Kidney Transplant Will Affect My Life:

A living kidney donor could give me the chance to enjoy life more fully again - to spend quality time with my family, regain some independence and continue doing the things I love. If you would consider becoming a donor or sharing my story with others, my family and I would be deeply grateful. One selfless act could truly change my life.

Military Service:

I served in the Marine Corp Reserves from 1971-1974 and received an Honorable Discharge.

My Blood Type: O
