Who Am I?

My name is Clarence Higgins and I am 28 years old. I have been battling with kidney disease for the last several years. In January 2020, I was fortunate enough to be part of what was then, the biggest ever 8-way donation chain at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. I was blessed with a kidney from a living donor. It was the best I had felt in years and was doing amazing. I had forgotten what a normal quality of life felt like and was living life to the fullest. I traveled a ton and had so many new first-time experiences.

Since June of 2024, I have had several extended hospital stays. Starting with appendicitis, pneumonia in September, and then I was hit really hard with not only pneumonia (again), but also rhinovirus and the flu in January 2025. While in the hospital, in an effort to treat the flu and pneumonia, I was given antibiotics and making little progress due to the anti-rejection medication (which suppresses the immune system.) I was taken off of the anti-rejection medication which caused the kidney to start rejecting and it was too late to reverse it. Unfortunately, I do need another kidney transplant and am currently on the transplant list. With any luck, the goal is to receive a new kidney before needing to go on dialysis.
